Post-Season Meetings - Please don't forget that we have our post-season meetings for all returning swimmers next week on Wednesday & Thursday, March 24 & 25. The boys' meeting will be Wednesday & the girls' meeting will be Thursday. Both meetings will be held in Coach Bigus' trailer & will begin promptly at 2:20pm. If you plan on trying out next season, you need to be at this meeting. We will be holding a discussion concerning captains for the 2010-11 season, as well as preliminary vote. There will also be a few other important topics of discussion. If you can't make the meeting, please see Coach Bigus ASAP. If we don't see or hear from you, we're going to assume you won't be returning next season.
Team Equipment - Please turn in your equipment (parks, bags, buoys, & fins) no later than Thursday, March 25. If your equipment is not turned in by this date, a student-debt slip will be submitted upon return from Spring Break. You can come & turn-in your equipment any time between now & Thursday, March 25. Please DO NOT come on Friday, March 26 to submit your equipment.

Team Pictures - Sorry, but once again, they're on hold. We weren't able to be squeezed into the spring sports schedule. And, once again, it seems as if the weather is to blame. With all the delays & cancellations because of the snow & rain, the picture schedule wasn't very forgiving. We'll work on getting something togther soon, so stay in touch.

Team Banquet - Our team banquet will be Wednesday, March 10 at 6:30pm at Icons in Fairfax, VA.. More information will be posted soon once the menu has been planned. Tenatively, it will include a buffet & will run approximately $12.00 per person. Please remember that team members don't have to pay as the banquet fee was part of their team dues. Note: If you paid for new caps mid-season & plan to attend the banquest, we'll take your banquet fee from the money we collected. We'll let everyone know were they stand on that soon.

2010 VHSL State Championship - In the finals session of the state meet, the girls' 200 medley & free relays held their seed & finished 8th & 7th, respectively. The 200 medley relay included Sana Alloo, Natalie Leake, Taylor Avery, & Susie Lesniewski. The 200 free relay included Susie, Taylor, Abby McCranie, & Natalie. Johnny Germanis bettered his 50 free time from the preliminaries session & in turn moved up two places from his seed & finished 13th overall. Natalie's 100 breaststoke swim at finals garnered her a 14th-place finish. All in all, the girls team finished 16th overall. The only two teams from our district to finish higher in the standings were Robinson (1st) & Oakton (4th). By virture of our lone boy swimming, Johnny led our boys team to a 45th place finish. (full results)

Update from States - So far so good. All four of our events qualified to swim at finals. Leading the way were the two girls' relays, which both qualified to compete for a medal. The girls 200 medley relay bettered their seed by one, moving from 9th to 8th. The girls' 200 free relay also bettered their seed by one, moving from 8th to 7th & were less than a half-second out of the top three. Natalie swam the 100 breast for the first time in nearly six weeks & qualified 13th coming back to finals. In his 1st individual event at States, Johnny G quailfied 15th in the 50 free. Things tip-off Saturday afternoon at 3:00pm, so check back Sunday for a finals update.

2010 Northern Region Championship - Regionals concluded last night (nearly 2 weeks after they were to begin). Originally scheduled as a prelims & finals meet, both the boys & girls prelims sessions were held as timed finals. Johnny Germanis led the boys team with a 7th-place finish in the 50 free & 14th-place finish in the 100 fly. The boys 200 free relay finished 16th & included Johnny, Mitch Cole, Mike Helme, & Connor Culleiton. Johnny will be advancing to the State championship this upcoming weekend by viture of his performance in the 50 free at Districts. On the girls side of the meet, Susie Lesniewski & Taylor Avery finished in the top 16 in each of their repsective events. Susie placed 11th in the 50 free & 12th in the 100 free, while Taylor notched two 13th-place finishes in the 50 free & 100 fly. Natalie Leake finished 7th in the 50 free, narrowly missing the top 6 to advance to States. The girls 200 free relay of Natalie, Taylor, Abby McCranie, & Susie finished 4th & will be revisiting the event at States for another shot at the team record. The same four girls took a shot at the State cut in the 400 free relay, but missed it by 0.53 of a second. By virture of the time the girls got in the 200 medley relay at the Kecoughtan meet, they will be advancing to States to give it a go one more time.

Regional practices - We will practice Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday at 4:15pm. The bus will leave CVHS at 3:30 each day. Club swimmers may attend Monday & Tuesday if they like, but should definitely plan on plan on attending on Wednesday. The girls will have prelims on Thursday night, but there will still be practice for the boys (on Thursday), but we don't know what time (it'll probably be earlier than 4:15pm). There will be no bus for practice on Thursday, so the boys will need to find a ride to the pool. The boys will swim prelims Friday night. The girls will be expected to go & swim an easy stretch-out practice on Friday to losen up from THursday night.
Important Regional information - Please take a moment to stress the importance of opposite genders not attending the prelims for Regions. This applies most particularly to students on-deck. The numbers of folks, both spectators & on-deck, continues to be a sensitive issue for the school system & the park authority. We are all bound by the occupancy codes set for safety standards. The bottom line is that it is possible that the meet could be interrupted or stopped & even worse, we could lose use of the facility if the overcrowding & unauthorized presence cannot be controlled. Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the excuse that the opposite gender students on-deck are “managers” simply doesn’t fly with the numbers of those students present. Neither does being a captain of the team justify attending the opposite gender prelims. It is unfortunate that we are in this position, but really, we are trying to protect the sport having the ability to host a culminating event in the largest swimming facility we have. We appreciate you assistance & cooperation on this very important issue. - Melody Modell, FCPS Specialist, Student Activities & Athletics

2010 District Championship (swim) - Both teams finished 6th overall in the final standings, but swam excellent. Individually, we were able to hit 83% best times (49 of 59). In the relays, we went 5 for 6 best times with all 6 relays qualifying for Regionals. Both 200 free relays swam incredible & finished 3rd in both of their races. The boys relay included Johnny Germanis, Mitch Cole, Mike Helme, & Connor Culleiton. The girls relay was just out-touched by less than a second for 1st place. It included Abby McCranie, Taylor Avery, Yoona Kim, & Susie Lesniewski. Individually, 17 different swimmers scored at least one point for the team total. Double top-16 finishers included: Johnny Germanis in the 50 free (3rd) & 100 fly (5th), Taylor Avery in the 100 fly (3rd) & 50 free (5th), Susie Lesniewski in the 50 free (4th) & 100 free (5th), Sana Alloo in the 100 back (6th) & 200 free (13th), Abby McCranie in the 50 free (6th) & 100 free (11th), Connor Culleition in the 50 free (10th) & 100 back (12th), & Mike Helme in the 100 fly (16th) & 100 back (16th). The following swimmers finished in the top-16 in one of their events: Bobby Kelly in the 100 fly (13th), Katie Schwindt in the 500 free (15th), Shannon O'Donnell in the 100 breast (9th), & Erin Hessler in the 100 breast (16th). Just missing the top-16 (17th or 18th): Yoona Kim (200 & 100 free), Katie Schindt (100 fly), Shannon O'Donnell (200 IM), Jenn Hagan (500 free), & Nick Cole (200 free).

District Results - We are still waiting on the final results from the District Championship. We will hopefull have something soon. Stay tuned!

Competing in the individual events will be Sana Alloo (100 back), Taylor Avery (50 free & 100 fly), Johnny Germanis (50 free & 100 fly), Natalie Leake (50 & 100 free), Susie Lesniewski (50 & 100 free), & Abby McCranie (50 free). All six of our relays qualified, so joining the team to round out the relays will be Jonathan Clark, Mitch Cole, Nick Cole, Connor Culleiton, Alex Hamrick, Michael Helme, Bobby Kelly, Yoona Kim, Shannon O'Donnell, & Katie Schwindt. The line-up for the relays will be discussed in practice on Monday. If you would like a Region t-shirt, the cost will be $12.00 per shirt. Please make your check payable to CVHS Swim & Dive.

Weather info for Districts - The decision concerning the plan for the Friday/Saturday schedule will be made by Friday morning. We will let you know more then, but in short, the coaches were told to have their relays ready to swim on Friday nioght just in case the Saturday session gets snowed out. If both Friday & Saturday get snowed out, prepare for timed finals on Sunday or Monday.
Hospitality for Districts swim - We've been asked to provide some beverages for the session on Saturday. So, if everyone could bring either (1) one 12-pack or (2) two 2-liter bottles of soda, that'd be great. Please bring something standard like Coake, Pepsi, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, etc. Please don't get creative with your selections.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010
District swim - The bus will depart from CVHS at 3:30pm on both Friday & Saturday for Districts. All swimmers entered will swim their individual events on Friday night. There will be 3 heats of each event, with the top 16 advancing to swim finals on Saturday night. Everyone, no matter if they qualify to swim or not, should plan to ride the bus on Saturday to attend the meet & cheer on our qualifiers. Attendance at finals is not optional - it's part of being a team. The top 6 finishers event will automatically advance to Regionals next weekend. Relays will be swum Saturday at the finals session. Being that we only have 6 teams in our district, all 6 finishers will advance to the Region meet. Please note that the relays will most likely be reorganized for Regions, so it's important to swim your best to prove that you belong on the Region team.
Inclement weather for Districts - There is a district coaches meeting this evening, so we're sure contingencies will be discussed in case we get hit with snow Friday or Saturday. The most likely option would be timed finals on Saturday night (or possibly Friday). Nonetheless, we're still 4 days out & a great deal could change with the weather forecast. Stay tuned.

Thursday, January 21, 2010
Herndon meet tomorrow - Please note that we need to leave a little earlier than previously posted. The bus is scheduled to arrive by 5:15pm, so as soon as everyone is accounted for, we'll roll out. The latest we can leave is 5:30pm, so please try to arrive early as we can't wait to depart a minute later. Sorry, but no advanced meetsheets this time around, as we've got many last minute changes. We'll have extra copies for parents tonight. The senior regcoinition starts at 6:15pm, warm-ups at 6:45pm, & then the meet at 7:15pm.

District meet & volunteer information - We are required to submit a list of names of volunteers for the District Meet. Prelims are on Friday and Finals on Saturday. This meet is with all the schools in our district (Westfields, Herndon, Oakton, Chantilly & Robinson) so it will be very crowded but will be a lot of fun for the swimmers & spectators alike. You are encouraged to bring chairs if you would like to sit out side the bleacher area. The deck is the best place to get a real good view of the action, so volunteering to help run the meet may be the way to go. Please e-mail Mrs. Avery if you would like to volunteer.  We will submit the names to the meet director for officials & they will choose the names for officials. We are required to name 4 timers for each night. These timers need to be fairly experienced. There is an entrance fee of $6.00 per person per night, so volunteering would mean that you will get in for free. Please note that CVHS Booster passes are not valid. Additional personnel are noted if you read on. Please let us know your interest by tomorrow evening so we can forward on to the meet director. Volunteers needed: 4 timers, stroke & turn judges, relay take-off judges (Saturday only as relays are not swum at prelims), clerk of course (easy gig), marshals, & hospitality attendant (guard the food & drink from the swimmers).

MLK Jr. Holiday reminder - Remember, no practice this Monday, so you're on your own. Here's a swim practice for Monday. You will earn an extra 2 points towards your practice point total, so it's a chance to get back some points you lost due to illness, vacation, schoolwork, etc. Please plan on submitting some proof (receipt, note from coach or senior captain, etc.) that you did in fact get to the pool. Try to get in the water on Sunday & shoot for at least 3000 yards within 60-75 minutes. DIVERS: You can go to Oak Marr as the diving well should be open for use.

Guest coach tonight - A silent auction fundraiser was held a few months ago at Union Mill Elementary for a number of different things donated by CVHS. We donated a "Coach for a Day" position & the winner, Carly Grecco, will be joining us tonight on deck. So, if you see her, please welcome her to the show. From what we understand, Coach Carly is a swimemr at Little Rocky Run, so many of you may know her from the summer.
Westfield meetsheet - If you would like a copy of the meetsheet for tonight's meet, please e-mail Coach Bigus by 5:00pm this afternoon. We'll have a few extra copies at the meet, but they will be limited. Please note that the 200 & 400 free relays on the girls' side of the meetsheet are not set in stone & we may switch things up at the meet depending upon how things are going. Please don't share our entries with Westfield as we don't want to show our hand.
Drylands on Saturday, Jan 16 - Drylands will be cancelled tomorrow if one of the following two things occurs: (1) 75% best times tonight from both teams combined or (2) either team wins their meet. We'll also be looking at a few other things to occur as well. We'd like to see Region or State cuts in the relays. If any relays cuts are acheived, they will be "bonus" points added into the best times totals. One point for a Region cut & 2 points for a State cut.
MLK Holiday - There is no schedule swim or dive practice this Monday, Jan 18 due to the holiday. We can't stress how important it will be for everyone to get some practice in on either Sunday or Monday (or both days). Don't take three days off! We will post a practice here online by Saturday night for you to go & do on your own. If you do go & do it, you will be given extra credit towards your practie participation total. You'll need to bring us some proof that the practive was completed, such as a receipt for a ReCenter pass or visual confirmation from a team captain or coach (team or club). If anyone has any "connections" at Lifetime Fitness for free passes, now's the time to use 'em.

Senior announcement - Mrs. Hagan would like all the seniors to meet at her house after school on Friday at 2:45pm for some senior pictures. Please wear something nice (casual attire) for the picture as we'd like to post the picture on the team website on the alumni page so you can be immortalized forever.
Team pictures - We're going to have our "official team pictures" on Monday, Feb 8 at 4:00pm (the Monday after Regionals). There will be a bus for everyone to take over to the pool (departing at 3:30pm). After pictures, weveryone will participate in a rousing game of water polo (or sharks & minnows if things get bloody) to cap off the season.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Round 2 vs. Westfield - We've got Westfield again this Friday night & we're back at Cub Run. Dive will be going first at 6:30pm. We will then take an extended break so that Westfields can recognize their seniors. We'll pick up with the swimming events after they are finished. Because of the extended break, we will be leaving CVHS on the bus a little later than normal. The bus is now scheduled to arrive at 6:00pm with a scheduled departure at 6:15pm. Please be on time for departure.
Extra team t-shirts - We've got a handful of this season's team t-shirts if there are any parents or family members who might be interested. They are the dark grey "nothing will work unless you do" shirts the kids wear for drylands. They have a paw-print logo on the front pocket. We have small, medium, & large sizes left. They are $10 per shirt or we'll give you 2 for $15.If you need a larger shirt, we may have some other shirts from past seasons available, so please let us know if you're interested. Thanks!

Kecoughtan meet update - From start to finish, everyone did a great job this past weekend. And we're not just talking about how well everyone did at the pool, but the fact that we left the hotel in one piece (ha-ha). Both teams represented CVHS well at the meet with the girls team finishing 6th out of 26 teams. The girls were only 45 points (which isn't much) from finishing in the top three. All three of the girls 'A' relays finaled & four girls - Natalie, Taylor, Sana, & Abby - made it back to finals in both of their two events. The boys team finished 18th out of 26 teams with two of the boys 'A' relays finaling & Johnny finaling in both of his events. Please check out the meet recaps page for more information on how everyone did in their races.
I'd like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Avery, Mrs. Balberde, & all the parents who made our Kecoughtan meet trip possible. I know I've gotten my fair share of thanks, but to be completely honest, the trip wouldn't be possible without all the parental support. In case you were unaware, Mrs. Avery took care of all the travel plans & lodging, as well as keeping everyone in line (including me). Mrs. Balberde took care of making sure everyone had lunch waiting for them at the hotel between sessions. All in all, this meet would be impossible to attend if it weren't for all the parents who chip in to help out. - Coach Bigus
Stay healthy - As we get close to the end of the season, your health should be super important. Far too many of you have worked too hard to get hit by some illness or infection right as we get ready to swim in Districts, Regions, & States. Please make sure to get enough sleep each night, dress warm, eat healthy, drink lots of water, & wash your hands. Most importantly, stay away from anyone who appers to be sick. You don't want their germs. None of us are indestructible & everyone of us are important to the teams success.

How will the proposed budget affect swim & dive? Sad to say, but this weekend's trip to Newport News to swim in the KHS meet may be our last. If you visit the FCPS website, you'll find an outline of the budget cuts & reductions for next year. Sadly, if the budget passes, swim & dive will receive a 50% reduction in practice time. There will also be a $100 participation fee for each sport you play that will go to FCPS, not the school or your team. Our intention is not to be a downer, but to encourage everyone going this weekend to have a great experience at both the meet & with your teammates. We started going to this meet four seasons ago to enhance the swim team experience by giving everyone a chance to travel, spend some quality time with their teammates, & offer an additional opportunity to compete (that the other teams in our district & region don't get). In addition, we also want to pass along our regrets to anyone who wasn't able to qualify, as we're sorry that you may not have the chance to go next season.

Kecoughtan meet - The team has a break for lunch early in the afternoon. Because it is not a long break, the team has had Panera lunches brought to the hotel. If you are interested in participating, we'll be happy to order you any of the following menu items. Please e-mail Eileen Balberde with your order ASAP. All swimmers & family members are welcome to participate! Panera needs the final order this Friday morning. The price includes athe full boxed lunch, assorted beverages, tax, & tip for the restaurant. We'll collect the money on Saturday. Thanks so much!

Robinson meet reminders - Don't forget that the Robinson meet at Oak Marr this Friday night (Jan 8) is an early meet, which means we'll be starting at 6:00pm. Since this is the first (and only) early meet we have this season, make sure you're back at CVHS ready to go earlier than normal. The bus will leave at 4:30pm. NOTE: As we've done the night before in the past the night before the Kecoughtan meet, the swimmers who will be competing on Saturday will be swimming the shorter distance events Friday night. We will be doing this to limit muscle fatigue for the preliminary session Saturday morning. We will also do the best we can to swim the same relay line-up ('A' and 'B' teams) Friday night as we will be swimming at Kecoughtan. This will give the everyone a little extra prep time before heading south.

Holiday Practices to do on your own! - They're our gift to you. We know. They're just what you wanted. You can't return them it as we know they'll fit, so there's no excuses to not go & use them. Your teammates are trusting that you're going to keep it going & be ready for Robinson & the Kecoughtan meets the first weekend back in school. There are three practices here & we will be posting a few more soon. Visit the "workouts" sections of www.swimmingworldmagazine.com to find some on your own.
New date for the Holiday Party - Since the holidays are so busy for everyone, the date for the party has changed so all can attend. So, please mark your calendars for Sunday, January 3rd at 5 pm at the same place. The goal is for all of you to be there. I hope I can count on all those who volunteered the food items from the previous date.  Enjoy your holidays with your families and please RSVP yes or no. Thanks so much! Donna Carlson scarlsons@aol.com
Congratulations to two of our fabulous divers, Rebekah Balint & Michael Culasuonno, upon their early acceptance to Virginia Tech. Besides being a veteran member of the our diving squad, Rebekah is also a four-year member of the Wildcat cheerleading team. This is Michael's first year as a member of our team, but we're so glad to have him as he rounds out the strongest group of divers that we've had on the boys' team for a number of years. Nice job Rebekah & Michael on your choice to become Hokies!

Reminder about FCPS cancellations - We understand that there has been some confusion about whether or not practice would still be on even though school has been closed. When school closes, everything school-related is cancelled. There are no exceptions unless it comes from the higher-ups. Just so you know, there was some talk about allowing practices to be resumed on Tuesday & Wednesday, but it didn't come to pass. This is from the office of Bill Curran: "Nothing today, Tuesday or Wednesday.  You may have practice Thursday forward (no practice on the 25th)  No competitions this week.  Be sure your coaches are clear on the expectations and follow the rules! No captains practice, no off site practice, no rec-center practice.  Nothing till Thursday (Dec 24)." Per request of Mr. Sanabria, there are no CVHS practices on the 24th.
Holiday practices (Dec 28-30) - Due to the cancellations this week, these three days of practice will be all the more important. So, if you are in town, you need to be at these practices. No exceptions, no excuses. We grabbed the 9:00am (swimming) & 10:00am (diving) slots to ensure that your holiday plans weren't interrupted as there's not much going on at that time. The bus for swim leaves @ 8:15am each morning & divers are carpooling over to Cub Run.
Make the time to practice - Please try & find some time to get to the pool on your own. If you truly want to accomplish something come Districts, Regions, & States, you simply can't take these few days off. Missing these few practices before the break is hard to swallow, so you need to continue grinding away & working hard on your own. If you look at the rosters of the other teams in our district, many of them are club swimmers & their practice aren't cancelled when FCPS decides to throw in the towel. We will be posting some practices very soon, so check back late Wednesday afternoon.
Kecoughtan meet info coming soon - We will be posting the information & permission slips for this travel meet very soon. We're just working out the final kinks. For everone's info, the following swimmers have qualified: Jonathan Clark, Nick & Mitch Cole, Connor Culleiton, Johnny Germanis, Alex Hamrick, Mike Helme, Bobby Kelly, Sana Alloo, Taylor & Rachel Avery, MacKenzie Cripe, Jenn Hagan, Erin Hessler, Yoona Kim, Natalie Leake, Susie Lesniewski, Melanie Luck, Gina Masters, Abby McCranie, Shannon O'Donnell, Katie Schwindt, & Jess Sussman.

Drylands on Saturday, Dec 19 are cancelled - Win, lose, or draw, we will not be conducting drylands this Saturday morning. Due to the impending blizzard of 2009, we feel that all team members should stay home & get a workout by shoveling their parents' driveways & sidewalks, as well do anything else their wonderful parents would like them to do. We suggest parents stay inside & let your little student-athlete get the much needed exercise. Christmas is right around the corver & Santa is watching. Time to be nice.
Oakton meet tonight @ Oak Marr - The bus leaves at 7:00pm for 8:00pm warm-ups. Both swimming & diving will begin at 8:30pm. If the meet runs smoothly, we should be swimming the last event just short of 10:00pm. Please note that the meetsheet is now posted online in the vicinity of 2:00pm - they will not be e-mailed out this week.
Thursday, December 17, 2009
Happy Holidays To All - We will be having our annual Holiday Party on Monday, December 21 immediately following practice. Team members will need transportaion from CVHS to the party site. Here is the flyer with additional info. We will need the following donations: baked ziti, caesars salad, fruit salad, garlic bread, bottled water, & volunteers to help. Please email Donna Carlson at Scarlsons@aol.com to donate or volunteer. We're also asking to let Donna know if your swimmer/diver will NOT be able to attend. The athletes are asked to bring a gift for an gift swap. Please spend between $15-$20. We're asking for no gift cards this year as it makes the process of takeaways less exciting, although a c ombination might be OK. Please have fun with the gift idea, but keep it rated PG.
Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Time change for swim practice on Dec 23 - Due to the early dismissal at 12:10pm, we will practice at 1:30pm on Wednesday, Dec 23. The management at Cub Run is allowing us to come in early like they did the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. We're still waiting to see if we'll be able to get a bus, so please stay tuned. Note: Don't forget, the three practices over winter break (Dec 28-30) are in the morning. Swimmers will practice from 8:45-10:00am (bus will leave @ 8:15am) & the divers will practice from 9:45-11:00am (no bus).

Get your name on your cap - If you would like to order some caps with your last (or first) name printed on them, you'll need to get your request into Coach Bigus via e-mail by Monday (no later than 12:00 noon). Orders will be placed around 2:00pm on Monday so we can get them by the first meet in January (2-3 week delivery time). You'll have your choice of latex or silcone, but you'll need to order at least a pair. You can order as many as you need after the initial pair. We will use these caps again next season. Latex caps will cost $20/pair & silicone caps will cost $30/pair. The caps will be the same design as we've been using, so if you don't want to pay for "named" cpas, you don't need to. You can just keep using the cap you were given at the start of the season. But, just a reminder, each swimmer only gets on cap (as part of you dues), so if you lose or rip you cap, you'll need to buy a new "blank" cap. If you would like to get these caps, please let us know: (1) how many you would like & (2) if you want latex or silicone.

Meetsheets for the Chantilly meet (Friday, Dec 11) will be available by request via e-mail beginning Friday morning. The meetsheet will not be posted on-line like last weekend. So, it you would like a copy, please e-mail Coach Bigus on Friday no later than 6:00pm & he will send you a copy. A limited number of extra meetsheets will be available at the meet. Events may be changed to up until each event is swum as the meetsheets are not official (the cards are). Because the other team may make changes at the last minute too, please don't share these meetsheets or your swimmer's events with anyone wearing purple (yuck).

Half-dozen cut times vs. Herndon - Despite the lousy weather & lack of a bus ride on Saturday, we were still able to make it to the pool. And, from the outcome of the meet, it's a good thing we did. Not only were the girls were able to exact some measure of revenge for two consecutive closes losses, but the boys & girls combined for six regional cut times & one state cut time. The girls' 200 medley relay of Sana Alloo, Natalie Leake, Taylor Avery, & Susie Lesniewski started the fun by notching both state & regional cuts at the same time. After sitting Friday's meet out, both Natalie Leake & Johnny Germanis made their first two individual events of the season memorable ones. Johnny garnered region cuts in the 50 free & 100 fly, while Natalie pocketed region cuts in the 100 free & 100 breast. To round out the evening, Susie Lesniewski, Taylor Avery, Jenn Hagan, & Natalie Leake qualified the girls' 200 free relay by also sliding under the region cut time.

Got Fins? - All swimmers should have started bringing a set of fins to practice starting this past Monday. We have loaners in trailer 18, but you've got to come before school to check a pair out for the season. Please get yours sooner rather than later.
Reminder about Drylands - Please wear your dryland shirt to drylands, as that's why we got them. We had a few team members come to drylands yesterday without it. Not good. If you haven't recevied yours, please see Coach Bigus ASAP.

Practice Attendance - We're in the second week of season & our practice attendance is a bit shakey. We want to offer a few things to think about concerning practices. #1: We only get 4 hours of pool time each week (sometimes less depending on the week). That's a fraction of what the other winter sports get. #2: In order to be awarded a Varsity letter, you need to earn 90% of the possible practice points. You earn 2 points for each swim/dive practice & 1 point for each dryland practice. As of yesterday (Tues, Nov 24), there are only 24 swimmers (of the possible 48) with at least 12 points (of the possible 14). We have to do better than that if we want to be successful this season.
Team Rules & Expectations - If you haven't taken the time to read them, please do so over the break.
Drylands - Don't forget that we do have drylands this Saturday (Nov 28) from 9:30-11:00am. Please meet in trailer 18.

Welcome to the 2009-10 season! We will start to post important news & notes on this page through the season, so please make it a habit to check-in on a regular basis for any new updates.
Meet the Coach Night is scheduled for Monday, Nov 23 at 6:30 pm. The evening will start in the cafeteria with words from our DSA & athletic trainers. Once they're done, we'll move to trailer 18 for some more focused discussions. All apparel orders need to be submitted by this time as we need to get everything ordered before the holiday break if we have any chance of getting things back before the first meet.
Team Dues & Apparel - Order forms posted. The only purchases that are required are team dues & suit. It is the same suit as last year, so returning athletes do not need to purchase a new one. There are also additional items available for purchase. Due to new school rules, we need to have all payments submitted & deposited into our team account before placing any orders. Order forms & payment are due Monday night.
VHSL Swim & Dive Rules Clinic on Tuesday, Nov 24 at 7:00 PM at West Potomac High School.  Mrs. Colandro attended the October session for the dive team, so they are covered. we need some swim parents to attend & any other dive parents interested in becoming certified.
Thursday, November 19, 2009:
Congratulations to our All-American relay member Sana Alloo on making Radford University her college choice. From what we understand, Sana was not only recruited by the Division I swim/dive team, but offered a scholarship as well. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, but we hear it was rather impressive. So, after graduation, she'll be off to apply her backstroking skills with the Highlanders.
